Mark Wood took 5-24 on his return to club cricket as he continues to recover from the elbow injury that has so far ruled him out of the summer.

Playing for his boyhood club Ashington in Division One of the North East Premier League, Wood batted at five and and bowled third change against Lanchester CC.

Ashington, who are top of the table, won the fixture by 112 runs with Wood running through the middle-order in the five overs he sent down, with three of his wickets clean bowled.

With the bat, Wood scored 10 off 11 balls before he was LBW to the spin of Pasindu Madushan.

It is not completely unheard of for Wood to turn out for Ashington, a club which is also the home of fellow right-arm quick Steve Harmison, as he also played one fixture last year where he took 0-12 from his four overs and scored four with the bat.

According to Play Cricket, this was Wood’s first five-for for the club since 2008, when he took 6-6 against Backworth CC.
