IND vs AUS first ODI Highlights: Shami takes five-for, India batting line-up fires to secure No.1 ODI ranking
India cruised to a five-wicket win against Australia on Friday (September 22) at Mohali, thanks to Mohammed Shami’s five-for with the ball and a grand opening stand aided by able support from the middle order: watch the highlights of the first IND vs AUS here.
Shami put up a show against Australia with Player of the Match figures of 10-0-51-5, registering his second five-wicket haul in ODIs. With 37 wickets under his belt, he is now the second-highest Indian wicket-taker against Australia in the 50-overs format. Only Kapil Dev has more – 45.
Chasing 277, India were off to a rapid start, with Shubman Gill as the main aggressor, bringing up his 50 in 37 deliveries. His opening partner Ruturaj Gaikwad played second fiddle and went on to score 71 (77) before being trapped lbw by Adam Zampa. The duo shared a 142-run stand.
Four wickets in quick succession in the form of Gaikwad (71), Gill (74), Shreyas Iyer (3) and Ishan Kishan (18) meant the home team was in a spot of bother. With India being reduced to 185-4 after 32.3 overs, skipper KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav steadied the ship. Yadav was dismissed right after registering his third-career fifty but the 80-run partnership between the two rescued his team from any lurking danger. Rahul finished with an unbeaten 58 (63), taking India over the line with eight balls to spare.
Earlier in the day, he had put Australia to bat first after winning the toss. Shami handed the first blow to the tourists, seeing the return of Mitchell Marsh for a run-a-ball four. A 94-run stand between David Warner and Steve Smith made it look like a big score was on the cards. However, the visitors were unable to escape the clutches of the opposition’s bowling. Warner top-scored for his side with 52(53). Pat Cummins played a 21-run cameo off nine balls in the end to post a respectable total.
