Watch: Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Siraj walk back in tears after crushing loss in World Cup final
Watch: Rohit Sharma and Mohammed Siraj were seen crying on their way out of the ground after Australia defeated India in the final of the 2023 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad today (November 19).
Chasing 241, Australia got off to a shaky start, losing three wickets inside the first seven overs as India dreamt of staging a comeback after a poor outing with the bat.
Their hopes were short-lived though, as Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne combined to stitch a match-winning partnership for the fourth wicket.
Head, who had already played a starring role in the World Test Championship Final against India a few months back, was at it again, scoring another century in another final. He scored a mammoth 137 off just 120 balls despite struggling in the initial part of the innings.
Labuschagne came in to bat at No.5 and was solid in defence, first against seam then against spin. His patient 58 not out off 110 balls allowed Head to continue attacking from the other end.
Head was dismissed close to the finish line as Australia won by six wickets, getting their hands on a sixth World Cup title.
India, who had a brilliant run, winning ten out of ten games till the final, were left dejected in front of home fans. Rohit Sharma had another stellar campaign, but failed to take his team over the line.
As the players walked back to the dressing room after the match was over, Rohit and Mohammed Siraj were seen with tears in their eyes. While Siraj didn’t make much of an effort to hide them, Rohit made his way up the stairs towards the dressing room quickly after completing the handshaking formalities.
