Watch: Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq hug it out, end IPL ‘spat’ at World Cup match
Watch: Naveen-ul-Haq and Virat Kohli embraced on the field during India and Afghanistan’s 2023 World Cup clash in Delhi on October 11, putting their controversial IPL spat behind them.
India were chasing down their target of 273 with ease after Rohit Sharma hit the fastest ever century in a World Cup by an Indian. Virat Kohli then finished off the job, finishing on 55 not out off 56 balls.
During his innings, Kohli found himself facing off with Naveen-ul-Haq once more, after the two had a heated encounter during the 2023 IPL. During the match between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Lucknow Super Giants in Bengaluru, Naveen had exchanged words with Kohli while batting at the back-end of the innings: the umpires had to intervene to separate the players. The incident continued after the match as words and heated gestures were exchanged during the post-match handshakes.
The incident also sparked an incident between Kohli and Lucknow mentor Gautam Gambhir, which generated much controversy at the time.
However, in today’s World Cup match, Kohli and Naveen put the incident behind them. Naveen came up to Kohli to shake his hands and seemed to exchange warm words with him. Kohli, too, smiled broadly during the exchange and patted Naveen on the back before the players parted ways.
Naveen finished the match with figures of 0-31 off five overs while India chased down their total with 15 overs to spare and won the match by eight wickets. Kohli hit a four to score the winning runs and registered his second consecutive half-century of the tournament.
